The Senate Committee on Health and Human Services today gave unanimous approval to legislation that would ban the use of welfare cash cards at strip clubs, casinos, and liquor stores.

Senate Bill 667, authored by Sen. Rob Standridge, would ensure that funds provided through programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) are used to provide meaningful help for families who need it most.

Sen. Rob Standridge has filed legislation that would disallow the use of any welfare cash cards in strip clubs, liquor stores, and casinos. Senate Bill 667 states that no electronic benefit transfer card containing state or federal funds from programs including, but not limited to, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), may be used in such establishments.

Standridge said his proposal would work to ensure the funds are directed to their appropriate use – to provide support for the needy while they get back on their feet.

State Capitol, Oklahoma City President Pro Tempore Brian Bingman, R-Sapulpa, announced on Monday that he had chosen Sen. Ron Justice, R-Chickasha, as the next Vice Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Justice will replace Senator Clark Jolley, who was recently named the committees Chairman.

Governor Mary Fallin signed a measure into law Tuesday that will protect landowners from the threat of eminent domain when companies are looking for locations to build wind turbines. Sen. Ron Justice, the author of Senate Bill 124, said the new law is important given the growing interest and success of the wind industry in the state.
