On Tuesday, the Oklahoma Supreme Court struck down, in a 6-3 decision, a fee that would have been charged to drivers of electric and hybrid vehicles, declaring it an unconstitutional tax.

Senator Micheal Bergstrom, R-Adair, agrees with the court’s decision.

“The Oklahoma Supreme Court made the right decision here,” said Bergstrom, “but it will cut this year's revenue by about another $400,000, which probably means more cuts in the budget.”

Sen. Micheal Bergstrom is in Phoenix, Arizona as a delegate attending the Balanced Budget Amendment (BBA) Planning Convention, which commenced on September 12 and is scheduled to complete its work on September 15. The gathering is preparing the rules and guidelines for a future Article V Convention of the States for proposing amendments.

“The national debt just surpassed $20 trillion this week, and it is projected to increase by a trillion dollars a year for the next decade. This is just not sustainable,” said Bergstrom, R-Adair. read more.

Senator Micheal Bergstrom, R- Adair, issued a statement Thursday regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling striking down the cigarette fee and declaring it an unconstitutional tax:

"As I sat in the courtroom and listened to the arguments in the Oklahoma Supreme Court on Tuesday, I came to the conclusion that the smoking cessation fee we passed last session was in serious trouble. This morning the court ruled that the fee was unconstitutional.

“Senator  Standridge is attempting to find a solution to a serious problem for children in failing inner-city schools. While I do not agree with Senate Bill 560 as it is written, I do want to give him the opportunity to make his argument and rewrite the bill so that it does not take away funds from any child in our schools,” said Sen. Micheal Bergstrom.   “That is the reason I voted to pass SB560 out of committee.  If he is not successful in this attempt, I will be voting against his bill.”

State Sen. Micheal Bergstrom has filed a bill that would cap tax credits at $25 million statewide for electricity generated by zero emission facilities, including wind energy, and another that could use the savings to provide a graduated teacher pay raise over the next three years.

OKLAHOMA CITY –   State Senator Micheal Bergstrom filed a bill this week to move the existing sunset date for the film industry tax credit program from July 1, 2024 to January 1, 2018.   Citing the anticipated continuing budget hole this year, Bergstrom, R- Adair, said accelerating the expiration of the program will save money that can be used in other crucial core areas like education.

OKLAHOMA CITY –   Newly elected state Senator Micheal Bergstrom was selected this week to serve on several Senate standing committees and two appropriations subcommittees for the upcoming first session of the 56th state legislature.   Bergstrom, who worked for years as a teacher before being elected last month to serve in the state Senate, will serve on the Education committee, as well as the Business, Commerce and Tourism committee.  He was also tapped by Senate President Pro Tempore-designate Mike Schulz to serve on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Finance as well as the Appropriations read more.
