Sen. Matthews to continue in Senate leadership role

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Kevin Matthews has been elected by his fellow members to serve another term as chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus. This will mark Matthews’ third term in the leadership post. As chair, Matthews will organize and preside over caucus meetings and help identify issues and legislation of importance to his fellow members.

“I appreciate the opportunity my caucus has given me to continue in this leadership role.  Although we are the minority party, each single member of this body represents nearly 83,000 Oklahomans, and their voices deserve to be heard just as much as those from any other district. We’ll continue to advocate for our constituents and for the kind of public policy that moves all of Oklahoma forward,” Matthews said.

In addition to his continued service as chair of the Democratic Caucus, Matthews will also hold seats on several key Senate committees, including Tourism and Wildlife; Retirement and Insurance; Aeronautics and Transportation; Public Safety; and the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“Each of these areas has a direct impact on my district, so I’m very happy to have a vote on these committees and will continue to champion legislation that best serves the citizens of District 11 and our state as a whole,” Matthews said.

Matthews will hold these positions throughout the 59th Legislature, which will include the 2023 and 2024 legislative sessions.  The 2023 session will formally convene on Feb. 6 and must conclude no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, May 26.
