Garvin tapped to serve on additional regional committees representing southern interests

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Jessica Garvin, R-Duncan, was appointed Tuesday by the Senate Pro Tem to represent Oklahoma on two additional regional committees. She will sit on the Fiscal Affairs and Government Operations Committee and the Human Services and Public Safety Committee of the Council of State Governments (CSG) Southern Office for a one-year term.

“I’m excited to have these additional opportunities to share the innovative programs and services we’re providing through our various state agencies, especially human services and public safety, while also learning new ideas from other southern states,” Garvin said. “It’s also important that we learn from each other what hasn’t worked so we don’t waste time or precious resources on unsuccessful programs that won’t help our citizens. I’m grateful to Pro Tem Treat for appointing me to these committees.”

In her new roles, Garvin will represent and share Oklahoma’s and the state Senate’s interests among other state legislators and CSG staff to reduce barriers and push the southern region forward. She’ll provide input and vote on official policy positions of her committees at the annual Southern Legislative Conference – the largest regional gathering of legislative members and staff in the nation, focusing on existing and emerging state government innovations and solutions. Garvin will also serve as one of Oklahoma’s presenters during the state legislative roundtable at SLC, among other responsibilities.

Established in 1947, the Southern Office is a member-driven organization and the largest of the four regions operating under the CSG. Its mission is to promote and strengthen intergovernmental cooperation among the 15 member states, which include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
