Sen. Frix Secures Committee Approval for Bill Increasing Pensions for Volunteer Firefighters

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Senate Retirement and Government Resources Committee unanimously approved Senate Bill 432. The measure by Sen. Avery Frix, R-Muskogee, increases pension benefits for volunteer firefighters who retire after the effective date of the act.

“Volunteer firefighters provide essential services in our communities, especially in rural areas,” Frix said. “This bill is an important step in recognizing their dedication and service while providing them with additional support as they transition into retirement.”

Volunteer firefighters who have retired after 20 years of service currently receive a monthly pension of approximately $150. Senate Bill 432 increases this amount to $10 for each year of credited service, up to 30 years, which would raise the monthly pension to as much as $300.

Senate Bill 432 will now undergo an actuarial analysis to determine the fiscal impact of increasing these benefits. Once the actuarial process is completed, the legislation can be considered during the 2026 legislative session.
