Telemarketing Restrictions Closer to Becoming Law

Sen. Keith Leftwichs effort to eliminate annoying telemarketing calls has cleared another legislative hurdle. SB 950 received final passage in the Senate Tuesday.

The Telemarketer Restriction Act creates a list of Oklahoma residents who do not wish to receive unsolicited telemarketing phone calls. The statewide registry will be maintained by the Attorney Generals office.

This bill is now one step closer to becoming law, said Senator Leftwich. SB 950 is now on its way to the Governors office for his signature.

Leftwich added, It strikes a blow for privacy in your home.

Any consumer who wished to be included in the no-telemarketing-sales-call registry would notify the Attorney Generals office by calling a toll-free number, or other means such as the internet. The Attorney General may contract with a private vendor to establish and maintain the registry, which will be established by the Attorney Generals office by January 1, 2003 upon passage of SB 950.

This bill, if signed into law, will provide Oklahoma citizens with added privacy from telemarketing companies and will ensure that Oklahomans are no longer bothered by annoying sales calls, said Senator Leftwich.

SB 950 received final passage on the Senate floor accepting all House of Representatives amendments. It will now be sent to Governor Keatings office where he will either sign or veto the bill. If signed, SB 950 will become state law.
