Standridge Bill to Provide Tax Relief to Oklahomans Displaced by Turnpikes Clears Committee

OKLAHOMA CITY — Sen. Lisa Standridge, R-Norman, has advanced legislation to temporarily freeze property taxes for Oklahomans displaced by the construction or expansion of turnpikes.

Senate Bill 2001 would freeze property taxes for three years for Oklahomans who must relocate because of a new turnpike. The freeze would take effect once a homeowner is settled into their new home, ensuring they don’t pay more in property taxes than they did at their previous residence.

“Families displaced by turnpike construction are already facing major upheaval in their lives,” Standridge said. “This measure offers them some consolation by making sure they aren’t hit with higher property taxes simply because they were forced to move. This tax relief is just a small gesture to show these Oklahomans that we sympathize with what they’re going through.”

SB 2001 passed the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee 10-1 as the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority’s ACCESS expansion plan threatens to displace dozens of families in Standridge’s Senate district.

The bill is now eligible for a vote of the full Senate.
