Senator Thompson’s Local Food for Schools Program Signed into Law

OKLAHOMA CITY - Senator Kristen Thompson, R-Edmond, today applauded the signing of one of her key legislative priorities, creating the Oklahoma Local Food for Schools Program.

Senate Bill 985 establishes a framework to connect Oklahoma schools with locally produced agricultural products, helping schools incorporate fresher, Oklahoma-grown foods into student meals while supporting the state’s farmers, ranchers and food producers.

“By creating stronger partnerships between our schools and local farmers, we’re improving access to fresh, nutritious food while investing in Oklahoma agriculture and local communities,” Senator Thompson said. “This program also creates a meaningful opportunity for producers across Oklahoma. This law helps create new market opportunities for local producers while giving students greater access to fresh foods grown and raised right here at home. I applaud Governor Stitt for signing this measure and appreciate Representative Pfeiffer for his help getting it through the House of Representatives.”

The legislation directs the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry to administer the program and coordinate efforts between schools and local producers. The initiative is designed to strengthen Oklahoma’s food supply chain, expand farm-to-school opportunities and encourage healthier meal options for students.

The program builds on ongoing conversations with educators, agriculture leaders and food suppliers about increasing access to locally sourced products in school cafeterias.
