OKLAHOMA CITY – Senator Adam Pugh, R-Edmond, joined Governor Kevin Stitt and U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon at a ceremonial bill signing of Senate Bill 796, landmark legislation that eliminates Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs across Oklahoma’s higher education institutions.

Senate Bill 796 codifies into law the governor’s prior executive order, ensuring Oklahoma’s colleges and universities remain focused on academic excellence, student success and equal opportunity for all.

The measure prohibits institutions within the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education from using state funds, property or resources to support DEI positions, programs, hiring practices or activities. It also bars colleges and universities from mandating participation in training or education that grants preference based on race, color, sex, ethnicity or national origin.

Additionally, Senate Bill 796 prohibits requirements for loyalty oaths, ideological statements, DEI declarations in hiring or the disclosure of personal pronouns.

“Today, we reaffirm Oklahoma’s commitment to an education system rooted in merit, hard work and opportunity for every student,” Senator Pugh said. “By ending divisive DEI programs, we are ensuring that our higher education institutions focus on preparing students for the workforce and for life, not political agendas. Senate Bill 796 is about putting students first and preserving fairness, equality and academic excellence.

“I was proud to codify the governor’s executive order into law with this legislation and thank Secretary McMahon for being here today for this ceremonial bill signing, and Governor Stitt for hosting us. Oklahoma will continue to be a leader in advancing policies that protect individual rights and ensure higher education delivers on its intended mission, not polarizing agendas to divide students.”
