Senator Hicks named Distinguished Alumna by OCU’s Petree College of Arts and Sciences

OKLAHOMA CITY – State Senator Carri Hicks, D-Oklahoma City, has been named the 2021 Distinguished Alumna by Oklahoma City University’s Petree College of Arts and Sciences (PCAS).

“I’m incredibly honored to have received this recognition. Oklahoma City University is dear to my heart. The education and guidance I received from OCU has helped pave my path through public service—in the nonprofit sector, the classroom and now at the state Capitol.,” Hicks said. “I’m forever grateful for the tremendous education I received and will always use that knowledge to help others and make our school proud.”

The Distinguished Alumni Award is given to one person each year and is held for the most outstanding college alumni. College faculty nominate distinguished alums and then the entire PCAS faculty votes on the nominations.

Hicks earned her bachelor’s degree in mass communications and political science and her master’s degree in leadership management from OCU. After earning a second master’s degree in early childhood education from Capella University, she worked for United Way and Saint Luke’s United Methodist Church. She began teaching at Putnam City Schools in 2011 and most recently taught at Deer Creek Schools until being elected to the Senate in 2018. Hicks is an active volunteer for education-related causes. She serves on the board for the nonprofit group, the STEAM Engine, where she helps build the next generation of makers and doers.

The school will present Hicks with a plaque at their end-of-year awards ceremony in May. The plaque will be mounted in Walker Center in her honor.
