Senate Republican Leader Glenn Coffee made the following statement following the Senate’s bipartisan vote to pass the higher education bond issue.
“Senate Republicans are strong supporters of higher education, and we proudly provided bipartisan support for the higher education bond proposal today,” Coffee stated.
“Senator Johnson’s amendment encouraging the regents to issue 15-years bonds instead of 25-or-30-year bonds could save taxpayers more than $200 million in interest. We are glad this fiscally sound amendment received such broad and bipartisan support,” said Coffee.
“Senate Republicans were also glad to see that Speaker Hiett has proposed some innovative ideas that could strengthen the bond proposal. We are hopeful that Gov. Henry, Senator Hobson and the Speaker will work together to find common ground and reach a bipartisan agreement,” Coffee said.
