Senate Democratic Leader Kirt wins unanimous committee approval for open records bill

OKLAHOMA CITY – A bill to ensure a timely response to open records requests is headed for a vote by the full Senate. Senate Democratic Leader Julia Kirt is Senate principal author of House Bill 2095, which received unanimous approval from the Senate Judiciary Committee this week. Kirt said the measure was about promoting transparency and building public trust in government.

“We want to be sure the government works for the people, not just for politicians. Oklahomans should be able to access information and not wait for months when they request records. This bill will help people hold government accountable,” said Kirt, D-Oklahoma City.

Rep. Annie Menz, D-Norman, is the House principal author of HB 2095.

“Good government doesn’t hide,” Menz said. “Transparency shouldn’t be just an option – it’s a mandate and we owe the people good and transparent government. I am encouraged that the bill is making its way through the process, and I appreciate Leader Kirt’s work on this very important issue.”

If approved by both chambers and signed by the governor, HB 2095 would take effect this November.
