Senate approves measure requiring display of Honor and Remember Flag

The state Senate on Tuesday approved legislation that would require the display of the ‘Honor and Remember Flag’ at the state Capitol to commemorate the sacrifice of fallen soldiers.

Senate Bill 395, authored by Sen. Bill Brown, would require the display of the flag on the south steps of the state Capitol, underneath the United States flag, upon the combat death of an Oklahoma soldier.

“We have a duty to honor men and women who have fought and died to protect freedom,” said Brown, R-Tulsa. “This proposal gives us a chance to memorialize soldiers who make the ultimate sacrifice to defend all that we hold dear. We want their families and loved ones to know they will never be forgotten.”

The Senate also approved Brown’s proposal to designate August 7, as “Purple Heart Day” each year in Oklahoma.

“This proposal is an expression of my gratitude for the men and women who answer the call of duty and put their lives on the line,” Brown said. “They represent the very best of Oklahoma, and we can never do enough to thank them.”

Both measures now advance to the House for consideration.
