Sen. Darrell Weaver will be drawing even more on his background in law enforcement as he takes on his new committee assignments for the next two years. Weaver, R-Moore, has been chosen to serve as vice chair of the Senate Committee on Public Safety, as well as vice chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Public Safety and Judiciary. Weaver was first appointed as a member of each of those committees after taking office in 2018. He’s the former director of the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.
“There are many areas of government I’m interested in, but having spent my career in law enforcement, I am really excited to have the opportunity to move into leadership roles in each of these committees,” Weaver said. “As vice chair, I’ll assist the chairs of each of these committees as needed for setting meeting agendas and conducting hearings to determine which bills will move forward to the next step in the legislative process.”
The Committee on Public Safety considers legislation dealing with criminal law, law enforcement entities, and motor vehicle regulation, while the Appropriations Subcommittee on Public Safety and Judiciary considers legislation with a fiscal impact, such as budget bills, for public safety entities and the judiciary branch of government.
In addition, Weaver will have seats on the full Senate Appropriations Committee and the Committee on General Government.
“I’m grateful to Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Treat for my appointments, and I look forward to working with my committee chairs and fellow members in the 2021 session.”
The Senate will meet for an organizational day on Jan. 5 to formally elect leadership and adopt rules for the next two years. The 2021 legislative session will formally get underway on Feb. 1.
