OKLAHOMA CITY – Friends and supporters looked on as Sen. Brenda Stanley, R-Midwest City, was sworn in for a second term in the Oklahoma Senate on Wednesday. Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell presided over the ceremony, and the oath was administered by Oklahoma Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard Darby.
“I love working on behalf of my friends and neighbors here in the Oklahoma Senate, and I am grateful that my constituents have placed their continued trust and faith in me to represent them. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished in the last four years to better support our schools, public safety, our military and improve health outcomes for our state, and I look forward to building on those successes over the next four years,” Stanley said.
During Stanley’s first term, she had tremendous success getting many major pieces of legislation passed and signed into law in a variety of areas. Stanley carried legislation exempting military retirement pay from state income tax. She also succeeded in the passage of a bill to address the backlog of off-base child care for military families. Stanley was principal author of a new law to ensure coverage of diagnostic breast cancer screening, helping women who have breast cancer get life-saving treatment sooner. She also authored a law requiring standardized investigations by the State Medical Examiner within 48 hours of a baby’s death, aimed at reducing the number of unexplained infant deaths in Oklahoma.
Stanley currently serves as vice chair of the Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Committee and holds seats on the Senate Education Committee, the Appropriations Subcommittee on Education, and Retirement and Insurance.
The full Senate will meet on Jan. 3, 2023, to formally elect leadership for the chamber and adopt rules for the 59th Legislature. The 2023 session will convene on Feb. 6.
