Sen. Sharp helps honor Mabel Bassett corrections employees

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Ron Sharp recently joined the state Department of Corrections and the Mabel Bassett Correctional Center in honoring four of the facility’s outstanding correctional employees. 
Those honored included Lt. Clint Bennett of Midwest City, Capt. Christopher Burchett of Shawnee, Sgt. Robbie Hicks of McLoud, and Corporal Daniel Pianalto of Choctaw. 
“It was an honor to get to recognize these four gentlemen.  These men exemplify the traditions, qualities and high standards of outstanding correctional officers within the Oklahoma Department of Corrections,” said Sharp, R-Shawnee. “Their leadership, positive attitudes, professionalism and strong commitment to the safety of this facility and their communities are to be commended.” 

Lt. Bennett was named the Mabel Bassett Correctional Center Correctional Officer Supervisor of the Year for 2016.  He received the award because of his strong work ethic and professionalism with staff, inmates and the public.  His leadership and guidance during critical incidents has prevented serious injuries to staff or inmates.  He is a skilled self-defense/CPR/First Aid trainer, in addition to his duties as a transportation and reception supervisor, and shift supervisor. 

Captain Burchett was named Correctional Officer Supervisor of the Year for 2017.  He was recognized for his hands-on approach to supervising, teaching by example, lending advice and structure to all of his officers.  He served honorably in the Airborne Infantry, completing four tours of duty, including Operation Iraqi Freedom. 
Sgt. Hicks was named Correctional Officer of the Year for 2016.  He received the award because of his effective communication skills with other staff during stressful situations, and when giving instructions to inmates.  Hicks shows initiative by serving as a member of the facility CERT, a firearms instructor and the assigned contraband officer. 
Corporal Pianalto was named Correctional Officer of the Year for 2017.  Having only began his career in 2016, he established him quickly through a professional work ethic that cultivates  staff success, pride and integrity.  He was praised for having a strong desire to help others not just in the Mabel facility but also in the community serving as a youth pastor.
