Rosino’s legislation aims to prepare schools for cardiac emergencies

OKLAHOMA CITY- Senate Bill 1921, authored by Sen. Paul Rosino, R-Oklahoma City, will ensure Oklahoma’s school districts are equipped and trained to respond to a cardiac emergency in athletic facilities or other school sites.

“Cardiac emergencies can happen to anyone at any time and are more likely to occur during exercise or while participating in activities,” Rosino said. “This measure will help educate both staff and students to not only recognize the signs of cardiac arrest but also how to immediately respond with life-saving care.”

SB 1921 would require schools to create a cardiac emergency response plan and establish guidelines for responding to such emergencies.

“The availability of trained personnel, access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and clear protocols for action are essential in preparing our schools for cardiac emergencies. Senate Bill 1921 will also foster working relationships with nationally recognized organizations, such as the American Heart Association, who can help schools across the state implement plans that fit their district's needs,” Rosino said.

Upon approval in the current legislative session, the provisions of SB 1921 would take effect July 1.
