Public invited to Breast Cancer Awareness Day at Capitol

Hundreds of Oklahomans from around the state will be at the State Capitol May 3 for the third annual “Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the Capitol”. The free event is open to the public and helps raise awareness about the disease and it’s affects on the state’s population as well as provide educational tools to victims and their families.
The Co-Chairs of the educational event are breast cancer survivor, State Sen. Judy Eason McIntyre and Breast Impressions’ founder, Judi Grove.
“It’s so important to have these kinds of educational events to help those struggling with the disease as well as help others learn about the importance of early detection through self exams and regular medical checkups,” said Eason McIntyre, D-Tulsa. “Education is important because early detection is sometimes the only way to save lives. It saved mine, and we want to ensure that all Oklahomans have the knowledge and resources they need to prevent this horrible disease.”
According the American Cancer Association, one in seven women will get breast cancer in their lifetime.
“This event has been a huge success the last two years and we’re expecting even more people this year,” said Grove.
“It’s estimated that around 2,400 Oklahomans will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and more than 5,300 will die from it. By having all of these medical professionals, counselors, specialists and survivors at one event, we can provide help and peace of mind to those who have been recently diagnosed with the disease or have a friend or family member battling it. We’re working to ensure more Oklahomans are survivors rather than another statistic.”
Eighteen organizations from throughout the state will have displays in the fourth floor rotunda with information on detection and prevention as well as treatment options, medical assistance and a variety of other information for victims and survivors.
The event will take place from 9:00 to 3:00. The Central High School Performing Arts Classical Dance class will perform at 10:00 a.m. Lieutenant Governor Todd Lamb will speak in the afternoon. At one point in the day, participants will be invited into the Gallery of the House and Senate to be recognized by both legislative bodies.
