Pro Tem Paxton Secures Senate Passage of Bill to Extend Foster Care Services to Young Adults

OKLAHOMA CITY – Senate Pro Tem Lonnie Paxton, R-Tuttle, today secured full Senate approval of Senate Bill 1806, which extends support services for young adults transitioning out of the foster care system.

The measure passed off the Senate floor unanimously.

Senate Bill 1806 directs the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to implement a voluntary program, extending foster care services to eligible individuals between the ages of 18 and 21. The measure is designed to provide stability and support during a pivotal stage of life as young adults pursue education, employment and independence.

“This legislation is about making sure young people who have grown up in the foster care system don’t suddenly lose support the moment they turn 18 years old,” Pro Tem Paxton said. “We want to give them a stronger foundation as they transition into adulthood so they can succeed in school, in the workforce and in life. Too often, young adults aging out of foster care face significant challenges without a reliable support system. By extending these services, we are investing in their future and helping reduce the risks of homelessness, unemployment and other hardships.”

Under Senate Bill 1806, individuals eligible for extended services include those in the custody of the Department of Human Services and those who achieved legal permanency through guardianship or adoption between ages 16 and 21. Participation in the program is voluntary, and individuals must not be receiving care from a parent or legal guardian.

To qualify, participants must be engaged in activities that promote self-sufficiency, including:

  • Completing secondary education;
  • Enrolling in a postsecondary or career technology program;
  • Participating in employment-readiness programs;
  • Working at least 80 hours per month;
  • Or being unable to participate due to a medical condition.

Senate Bill 1806 now advances to the Oklahoma House of Representatives for further consideration.
