Painting of Elk Herd in the Wichita Mountains Dedicated

Senator Charles Ford announced the dedication of another original painting commissioned by the Oklahoma State Senate Historical Preservation Fund, Inc. The painting, titled "Elk Herd in the Wichita Mountains" by regionally known artist Barbara Vaupel of Henryetta, was unveiled during a ceremony in the House Chamber this afternoon.

"Ms. Vaupel's approach to landscapes and her thematic focus on the American West make her a natural choice to create a work for our Capitol. This painting sends an important message about conservation. The fact that we have elk in the Wichita Mountains today is remarkable. We need to ensure that the survival of this species continues," explained Senator Ford, President of the Senate Historical Preservation Fund, Inc.

The painting is a gift of former State Representative Don McCorkell of Tulsa. A member of the House from 1978-1996, McCorkell is owner and president of Sequoyah Capital and Development, LLC. During his 18 years in the House, McCorkell authored numerous pieces of economic development legislation and was Chairman of the House Economic Development Committee. He also led the drive to create the Department of Environmental Quality.

"Don McCorkell's gift will serve as a reminder of the precious wildlife and natural surroundings of our state," noted Senator Ford.
