Oklahoma Rifle Association honors Sen. Jo Anna Dossett

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Jo Anna Dossett, D-Tulsa, has been honored by the Oklahoma Rifle Association (ORA). Dossett was presented with the association’s 2024 ORA Legislator of the Year award. Throughout the 2023 interim and during the 2024 session, Dossett has been working on legislation to incentivize greater use of gun safety devices.

“I was so pleased that the ORA addressed our interim study and stated their support for the concept of using tax incentives for the purchase of firearm safety devices,” Dossett said. “I’ve said many times I believe most Oklahomans are responsible gun owners and many are already using safety equipment. The goal is to encourage others to do so as well.”

Dossett is principal Senate author of two bills aimed at incentivizing the use of gun safety devices. Senate Bill 1476 included a state sales tax exemption for those devices. It was approved in committee but didn’t make it to the Senate floor for a vote by the March 14 deadline. HB 3427, which Dossett is carrying in the Senate, would provide a tax credit for the purchase of firearm safety devices. That bill, which was overwhelmingly approved by the full House, is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Public Safety Committee on Thursday.

“Using tax incentives to promote greater gun safety is something more than a dozen other states are already doing, and additional states are also considering,” Dossett said. “It’s a commonsense approach that can help prevent injuries and deaths. I appreciate the ORA for their input on this effort, and I am grateful for their organization’s recognition.”
