ODOT approves local lake access projects

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) approved two local lake access projects in Pottawatomie County this week.  ODOT will be upgrading roadways to recreational areas at both Twin Lakes and the Wes Watkins Reservoir.

“Oklahoma is known for its beautiful lakes, which attract tourists from all over the world and provides significant revenue to local communities,” said Sharp, R-Shawnee.  “It’s important that the state maintain these natural gems, and providing better access to our lake recreational areas is an important part of that effort.”

The City of Shawnee requested the lake access project for Twin Lakes.  The project will involve overlaying Pecan Grove Road beginning at State Highway 102 and extending west nearly one mile to Lake Dam Road. Shawnee in conjunction with the County will be responsible for the initiation, construction and completion of all work associated with the project.  ODOT’s participation will not exceed $130,000.

“Our lakes provide not only a fun, relaxing retreat for local residents but also for tourists from around the state and beyond.  For this reason, we must keep the recreational areas and roadways around our lakes in good condition,” said Newell, R-Seminole.  “Oklahoma’s weather is brutal on our roadways and projects like these ensure that guests can easily and safely get to and enjoy our lake recreational areas.”

The second project was requested by the Pottawatomie County Commissioners and the Town of McLoud.  Work will include upgrading Arena Road just north of the Wes Watkins Reservoir beginning at SH-270 and extending one mile to Redskin Road.  The county will be responsible for the initiation, construction and completion of all work associated with the project.  ODOT’s participation will not exceed $85,000.

“We continually strive to build and maintain the best roads possible for the residents of Pottawatomie County and we wish to thank ODOT for their support on this project,” said Pottawatomie County Commissioner Melissa Dennis.
