Local legislators plan Town Hall meeting Thursday
to discuss recent earthquakes

OKLAHOMA CITY – Over the past several weeks, central Love County has experienced numerous earthquakes.  These tremors have ranged in magnitude from 1.8 to 3.2 on the Richter scale and there have been reports of property damage throughout the area.

Personnel from the Oklahoma Geological Survey have been on site installing monitoring equipment to collect data and determine the cause and source of the tremors.  As of Monday, there has been no definitive conclusion.

State Sen. Frank Simpson and Rep. Tommy Hardin have scheduled a Town Hall meeting for this Thursday, October 3 at 6:00 PM to be held at the Love County Fair Barn.  The public is encouraged to attend.

“This meeting will allow citizens to get answers to their questions about these recent occurrences,” said Simpson, R-Ardmore.  “As we all know, there are many rumors circulating and, hopefully, the experts can offer facts to put those rumors to rest.”

Similar situations have occurred in recent years in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and most recently in Timpson, Texas. Timpson is located in the Haynesville shale formation — a hotbed of activity for natural gas exploration and extraction.

“This will be an important meeting as Representatives from the Oklahoma Geological Survey and the Corporation Commission will be on hand to provide information and answer questions,” said Rep. Hardin, R-Madill.  “I want to strongly encourage local citizens to attend this meeting.”

Many residents suspect saltwater injection but as of yet there has been no direct link established.  The Oklahoma Corporation Commission is working with the Oklahoma Geological Survey and oil and gas operators to come up with a list of best practices for saltwater injection wells.
