OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Darcy Jech, R-Kingfisher, held an interim study Thursday in the Finance Committee to evaluate fees, penalties and interest imposed by the Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) as well as agricultural tax exemptions and their applications. Presenters included representatives from the OTC, Carolyn Sanders (Anadarko) and Mitch McAbee (Weatherford), both certified public accountants who regularly interact with both the commission and taxpayers.
“Today’s interim study originated from District 26 constituents that have contacted me with their concerns about OTC practices. Some constituents feel they get no direction from the OTC when faced with penalty and fines. It is our job in Oklahoma government, as servants of the people, to offer the best customer service to the people that fund this state with their taxes. We looked into various tax-related issues and provided insight on the burdens placed on Oklahoma taxpayers and small businesses owners. We heard from experts on both sides of these issues, and they provided valuable information that will be incredibly helpful for crafting future legislation. I look forward to continuing these conversations heading into the next legislative session and will continue advocating for Oklahoma taxpayers.”
Jech’s study highlighted issues with usage of agricultural sales tax exemptions, as well as high interest rates that make it difficult for taxpayers to pay the penalties, resulting in some selling or closing their businesses.
