Greatest Generation Project to Send Veterans to WWII Memorial in Nation’s Capitol

Sen. Kenneth Corn on Tuesday announced that fundraising efforts for “The Greatest Generation Project” will allow 51 World War II veterans in his district to visit the WWII memorial in Washington, D.C.

Together with Rep. Neil Brannon and Rep. Glen Bud Smithson, Sen. Corn initiated fundraising for the project in February, and enough money has been raised to cover all travel expenses for the group of veterans.

Corn said the inspiration behind the project was that all WWII veterans should have the opportunity to visit the memorial, regardless of their ability to pay.

“As we approach Oklahoma’s centennial celebration, I believe it’s important that we honor the contributions of our veterans at such a critical moment in history,” said Corn, D-Poteau. “We can never repay these men for their sacrifices on behalf of our country. This trip is a gesture of gratitude to thank them for their bravery.”

The group will depart for the nation’s capitol on Friday. Corn said one veteran who was scheduled to make the trip unfortunately passed away before having the opportunity to visit the memorial.

“It’s been an honor to have been involved in this project, and it’s given me the opportunity to meet so many great men whose service helped change the course of history,” said Corn. “These men bravely represented our state and country and risked their lives to preserve the safety and freedoms we enjoy here at home. Giving them the opportunity to see the memorial that honors their sacrifice is the least we can do to thank them.”
