OKLAHOMA CITY- House Bill 1795, the Sergeant CJ Nelson Legacy Act, was signed by Gov. Kevin Stitt Wednesday. Sen. Kristen Thompson served as the Senate author of the measure, named in honor of Edmond’s first officer lost in the line of duty.
"Our first responders make tremendous sacrifices every day, risking their lives to ensure our safety, and their families bear a significant emotional burden knowing the dangers involved," Sen. Thompson stated. "This critical legislation represents a vital step in providing support for these families in the event of a tragedy. The loss of Sgt. CJ Nelson, along with many other first responders, underscores the need for ongoing support for their surviving loved ones. I am so proud to have carried this important bill."
HB 1795 covers administrative fees and room and board for children of peace officers, firefighters, or emergency medical technicians who died in the line of duty. Tuition is already covered for these students at Oklahoma colleges, universities, and Career Techs.
