Alvord Pleased with Passage of Bill Eliminating State Sales Tax on Groceries

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Jerry Alvord, R-Wilson, commends the recent passage of House Bill 1955, which eliminates the state portion of the sales tax on groceries. The legislation passed on Thursday with a vote of 42 to 2.

“By eliminating the State's portion of the grocery tax, we are helping a bigger percentage of Oklahomans because all Oklahomans buy groceries,” Alvord said. “This will affect more constituents in a more meaningful manner than the other tax cut options that were put forth.”

The bill, which eliminates the 4.5 percent state sales tax on groceries, aims to address the financial challenges faced by Oklahoma families and alleviate the burden of rising costs. It’s estimated the tax cut will save each Oklahoman an average of $400 to $700 per year.

“Eliminating the state sales tax portion on groceries will bring long-awaited tax relief to Oklahomans reeling from inflated prices, due to awful policies in Washington,” Alvord said. “Oklahomans will benefit every time they go to the grocery store.”

The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk. If signed, the bill will take effect sometime in August.
