California Road Through Indian Territory

With the discovery of gold in California in 1848, thousands of settlers headed west from Fort Smith, Arkansas, and followed the California Road, which was a trail along the south bank of the South Canadian River.  Emigrants made the Edwards Trading Post in present Hughes County one of the busiest commercial enterprises in the territory.  Wagon ruts can still be seen along the trail that lost its importance with the coming of the railroads.
