Public invited to celebrate Hispanic Cultural Day on May 14

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Legislative Latino Caucus is inviting the public to attend the ninth annual Hispanic Cultural Day at the state Capitol on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. Sen. Michael Brooks, Latino Caucus chair, said this year’s celebration will highlight “Hispanic Impact in the United States,” focusing on the economic contributions the Hispanic population has made throughout the country.

“The U.S. Latino GDP was $3.6 trillion in 2022, and if it were a stand-alone economy, it would be the fifth largest in the world – that’s more than India, the United Kingdom, France and other major economies,” said Brooks, D-Oklahoma City. “Here in Oklahoma, the Hispanic community contributes $8 billion in state revenue. It’s a critical part of our state and national economy.”

The event will be held on the second floor of the Capitol and will feature art, music, dancing, food tastings, exhibitor booths, and advocacy.

“I am excited to celebrate Hispanic Cultural Day this year,” said Rep. Annie Menz, D-Norman. “We are looking forward to raising our voices to honor the heritage that empowers us, celebrate the cultures that unite us, and advocate for a future where every Hispanic story is heard, respected, and uplifted.”

Hispanic Cultural Day events will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, with welcoming remarks and keynote speaker, Claudia San Pedro, former president of Sonic Drive-In. Exhibit tables will feature local Hispanic restaurants and non-profit organizations from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., and music and dance performances will begin at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor rotunda.

“As the fastest growing demographic in Oklahoma, Hispanic residents are enriching all aspects of our state,” said Rep. Arturo Alonso-Sandoval, D-Oklahoma City. “I look forward to welcoming our community to showcase their culture at the state Capitol through our food, music, and dance. Additionally, the Hispanic community contributes billions to our state’s economy and fills crucial roles across every industry.”
